Mixing and Mastering

Joe RARSThe Evolution Of Under The Boardwalk

3 Versions

4th track Lead Vocal only

  1. My friends 5 piece band come over to record a CD in the summer of 2010. They recorded in my 21’Lx14’Wx9’H living room. The room did not have any sound treatment. \-: Back then I recorded on a Zoom HD16 mixer. Microphones’ I used at the time; vocals 4 Audio Technica M4000S.  Very old 1980’s set of Drums that I got from my cousin:  Used 1 Audio Technica 2035 as overhead. Guitars and Bass plugged straight into the mixer. Instruments recorded first. Then the Lead singer and backup vocals.
  1. Is a quick mix on the Zoom mixer due to the bands time limitations? I suggested to the lead singer on the song to redo his vocal track, but did not want to. The original bass player was unable to return to redo his bass track do to his location and transportation. The bass track was scraped and I played a Fender Jazz Bass on a new track.
  1. Months later (2011-12) they came back and finished their other 3 songs for the CD. They decided to have it all mastered. I did that job on the PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2 with Studio One Professional. We now use the SL24.4.2AI and RM16AI, daisy chain up to 40 plus channels. Which either mixer works great out on gigs.
  1. The last track is just the lead singer’s original vocal track. \-: You may want to listen to this one first. Starts at appx 00:07. You can hear the pops, plosives from the B’s , P’s ,S’s and other noises etc. Also the vocal drops/fades in the songs. Due to him sitting down (should have been standing). Bobbing head back and forth and sideways. Next I will be redoing the vocal backup tracks. To tighten them up a bit. Or hopefully they will do the backup tracks over. Which can be much quicker to do and less expensive for clients.
